6: SEEN COMPREHENSION
Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:
One day, while at work in the coal-mine, I happened to overhear two miners talking about a great school for colored people somewhere in Virginia. This was the first time that I had ever heard anything about any kind of school or college that was more pretentious than the little colored school in our town. I heard one telling the other that not only was the school established for the members of my race but also for the poor.


i) Write the title and the writer of the given passage.
Answer: Title: Up from Slavery (Struggle for an education -Textbook Unit 7)
Writer: Booker T. Washington

ii) Identify what kind of school it was.
Answer: It was a school for African Americans, including poor people—the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in Virginia.

iii) What does it mean by `my race'?
Answer: “My race” means African Americans, or Black people. (As writer Booker T. Washington belongs to African American community)

iv) Classify the word class of the following words:

Answer: Word classes:

v) Identify one regular and one irregular verb from the given passage.
Answer: v) Regular Verbs:

Irregular Verbs
(Verbs that do not follow the standard "-ed" rule for past forms.)
