THE POPULATION EXPLOSION

The population issue has become one of the most serious problems in the world. The global population in the past was significantly lower than it is today. By the end of 1850, the world population was 1 billion. The current rate of population growth suggests that it could double in just 40 years. In case of over population real per capita income of the country begins to fall.

The population explosion problem can be defined as the situation in which the number of bread-eaters in country exceeds the number of its bread-earners.

The term "explosion" in this economic context is used to convey a sense of horror comparable to the detonation of an atomic bomb, such as the devastating event that occurred in Hiroshima, resulting in the immediate loss of nearly 80,000 lives. The population explosion follows a similar trajectory of rapid growth and impact.

The main reason for the population increase is the difference between birth rate and death rate. Science has helped us to control death-rate. But at the same time, bifth rate has not been checked. The real per capita income in Pakistan is very low which shows that the country is overpopulated. In the over populated countries dependent age group is increasing and rate of development is very slow. Due to heavy pressure of population, people are unable to obtain balanced diet. Poor diet affects health and working capacity of the people. There is shortage of various facilities like housing, clothing, education and transport.

In the overpopulated countries like Pakistan, rate of savings is low. Due to low rate of saving, rate of investment and employment is low. The literacy rate in Pakistan is only 26%. We can say that population growth is the main obstacle in the way of economic development.

Population control is the urgent need of the hour. We must take two simultaneous steps: increasing production and controlling the birth rate. In industries, we should strive to enhance production through improved management and planning. Family planning should be promoted to discourage high birth rates and reduce the population. To manage excessive population growth, certain measures should be implemented, such as prohibiting marriage below the age of 21 by law. Large-scale public works programs, including the construction of roads, dams, canals, railway lines, and bridges, should be initiated to provide employment opportunities for the unemployed and reduce dependency on limited resources. Additionally, efforts should be made to improve the literacy rate.

In conclusion, the issue of population explosion is a complex and multifaceted challenge that requires immediate attention and effective solutions. The consequences of unchecked population growth can have far-reaching impacts on society, the economy, and the environment. It is crucial for governments, policymakers, and individuals to work together to address this issue through education, access to family planning resources, and sustainable development practices. By taking proactive measures to manage population growth, we can create a more sustainable and prosperous future for generations to come.
