NOTE: There are 7 characters in the play, these are:

Exercise 8:

Work individually and sketch the following characters with the help of below given mind map. Once you have completed, share your work with your class fellows.

Ans: CHARACTER SKETCH

a. Mr. Spelding

Mr. Spelding is a major character in the play. His name is Roger Spelding. He has the following qualities.

• Personality Traits:
  He is a middle-aged, unctuous and resonant.
  
  
• Role:
  He plays a role of TV Broadcaster in the play. He is a major character in the play and plays a vital role in the developing of the story.
  
  
• Actions:
  1. His broadcasting about the Spaceship. He denies the new technology.
  2. His protest against the marriage relationship of his daughter Ellen and John.
  3. His protest against the Martial Law at his house.
  
  
• Others Opinion:
  Professionally, he is sincere and honest. He cares for his family a lot. He is an adventurous and ambitious. He is an American in nature and proud to be American. Over all he is a sincere person.

b. Mrs. Spelding

Mrs. Spelding is a wife of Mr. Roger Spelding in the play. She has the following qualities.

• Personality Traits:
  She is bored and vague. She knits passively while his husband talks at his desk.
  
  
• Role:
  She plays the role of a wife of a TV Broadcaster and the owner of the Rose Garden where Kreton is landed with his spaceship.
  
  
• Actions:
  1. She interrupts and favours her daughter against her husband.
  2. She also favours John while her husband is talking about him.
  3. She protests against the Kreton who spoils her Rose Garden.
  
  
• Others Opinion: \
  She is fashionable lady who is very choosy and specific about her fashion. When she sees Kreton she likes his whiskers a lot. For that she goes to her make up room and uses it to beautify herself. She has no sacrificial sense. She is always worried about her Rose Garden but she has a sympathetic nature. She sympathizes with John and her daughter.

c. Ellen

Ellen Spelding ( a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Roger Spelding and fiancé of John) is another major character  in the play. She has the following qualities.

• Personality Traits:
  She is lively, energetic and beautiful girl of twenty. She fidgets as she listens.
  
  
• Role:
  She plays the role of a daughter of the TV Broadcaster whose house is used for the setting of the play.
  
  
• Actions:
  1. She goes against her father in the matter of her marriage with John.
  2. She favours John and his work.
  3. She interferes and requests Kreton to read her and John's minds.
  
  
• Other Opinions:
  She is a lover and always favours John, her fiancé. She is caring because she cares John a lot when he goes near to Kreton and his spaceship. She is sensitive and fanciful too. Over all, she is of good nature.

d. John

John (Fiancée of Ellen Spelding) is an energetic character  in the play. He has the following qualities.

• Personality Traits:
  Young and energetic boy.
  
  
• Role:
  He plays the role of a fiancée of Ellen Spelding and the first person who notifies the appearance of Kreton and its spaceship.
  
  
• Actions:
  1. He is the first person to witness appearance of Kreton and his spaceship.
  2. He is the first person goes very close to the alien.
  3. Worries about the family who don't know where he is.
  
  
• Others Opinion:
  He is hard worker but not ambitious. He has his own farmhouse. He sits and works there but never tries to do an adventurous task. He has purple thoughts about Ellen.

e. General Powers

General powers is a strong character  in the play. He has the following qualities.

• Personality Traits:
  Middle-aged General, greedy of promotion and is proud of America. He is quite disciplined and a sober person.
  
  
• Role:
  He plays a major role. In some sense he can be said a villain of the play. He plays an antagonist role against Kreton.
  
  
• Actions:
  1. He comes with his equipped army to arrest the Kreton.
  2. He imposes Martial Law in the house of Spelding.
  3. He warns Kreton to surrender.
  4. He also talks to the president of the United States.
  
  
• Others Opinion:
  He is an honest army officer. He works first for his country then for his promotion. He is boast of America and represents a true American. Over all, he is well-disciplined and sober officer.

f. Kreton

Kreton (an alien) is the main character  in the play. He has the following qualities.

• Personality Traits:
  He is forty years old. He is a mild, pleasant looking man with side whiskers and dressed in the fashion of 1860.
  
  
• Role:
  He plays major role in the play as he is the hero of the play. The entire play revolves around him and his actions.
  
  
• Actions:
  1. He has the power to read the minds of the earthly people.
  2. He has an encounters with General Powers.
  3. He stuns the army of General Powers.
  
  
• Others Opinion:
  He is kind and soft nature person. He speaks kindly to every one. He has full control over his mind and emotions. He never hurries to do the things. He does the things on the exact time.
