Q.1: What is a barrage? ORWhat are the benefits of a barrage? OR
Why are barrages built? How can we get benefits from a barrage? (KHI* Board Science 2012, 2013 & General 2008, 2012)
Ans: (i) A barrage is a kind of wall constructed across the river.
(ii) It has gates through which water passes in a limited quantity.
(iii)A barrage controls the flow of water in floods and thus protects life and property.
(iv) A barrage also stores water which is used for irrigation through canals.
Q.2: What are the benefits of Guddu Barrage? (KHI* Board Science 2007, 2008, 2012)
bAns: The Guddu barrage is built on the River Indus. We get the Benefits of Guddu Barrage in the following ways:
(i) A flood of about 1.2 million cusecs can pass through the Guddu Barrage. It controls the flow of water in flood season and in this way life and property can be protected from flood.
(ii) The barrage stores water in such a way that the canals get water through out the year and the farmers can give water to their fields according to their needs.
(iii) The barrage irrigates an area of 2.7 million acres mostly in Sukkur and Jacobabad district of Sindh.
(iv) It will increase the grain output by half a million tons.
(v) The seven meter wide road over the bridge has reduced the distance between Lahore and Quetta while the distance between Rahim Yar Khan and Kashmore has almost been halved.

Ans: The Guddu Barrage has three main canals. They are one of the biggest feeder canals in the world. The Begari Sindh Feeder and the Desert Pat Feeder are on the right bank and the Ghotki Feeder on the left bank of the Indus river.
Q.4: Why were most towns in ancient times built near rivers?
Ans: Before the building of roads and railways, most trade was done by boats and ships. This is the reason for most towns in ancient times were built near rivers. Besides this, rivers provided water for irrigation.
Q.5: What are the two problems posed by rivers? What is the solution to these problems?
Ans: The two problems posed by rivers are :
(i) How to get water from the rivers throughout the year
(ii) How to escape the fury of floods.
Solution: A barrage is the solution to these problems. Barrages store water and control the flow of water.

Ans:
(i) The Guddu Barrage is one of the biggest barrages in Pakistan, which has been built on the Indus river.

(iii) The barrage is 1355 m in length and has three main feeder canals.
(iv) It has brought many benefits to our country.

Q.1: What were the three questions asked by the king? OR What were the questions that were put to the learned men to discover the secret of success? OR What were the three questions which troubled the king in search of secret of success?Ans: A long time ago, there lived a king who was in search of the secret of success. He thought if he could find out the answers to three questions, he would discover this secret and would never fail. These questions were:
(1) What is the most important time to start some work?
(2) What is the most important work to do?
(3) Who is the most important person?
Q.2: Why did the king want to know the answers to his three questions? OR What did the king ask his minister to do and what was the result?
Ans: The king was in search of the secret of success. He thought if he could find out the answers to three questions, he would discover this secret and never fail. SO the king asked his ministers to announced that whoever answered these questions, would get a reward of 5,000 gold coins. Many person came but none give the correct answer.

Ans: The bearded man was a bitter enemy of the king because he had got his brother killed. He wanted to take his brothers's revenge by killing the king. The king might have been killed if he had returned earlier from the saint's hut.

Ans: The king had heard of the saint's wisdom who lived in the jungle at some distance from the capital. The problem with the saint was that he did not mix with the rich. The king overcome the problem by disguising himself in rags and set out to see the saint.

Ans: The bearded man wanted to kill the king because he had got his brother killed. He kept in hiding for the return of the king. As the king did not return, he came out of the hiding and was wounded by the king's servants.

Ans: The king called the wise and learned men of his country to his court. He discussed the problem with them for many days. They were not able to satisfy him. If some of them gave one answer, the others argued against it. The king did not approve of their answers.

Ans. The trouble with meeting the saint was that he did not like the rich people. He was friendly with the poor. The king thought of a scheme to overcome this difficulty. He dressed himself in rags to appear as a poor man. He told his servants, who were in attendance, to stay behind and went straight to the saint's hut.

Short Note Or Summary On The Secret Of Success
A long time ago there lived a king. He was in search of the secret of success. He framed out three questions, answers to which could help him find the secret of success. The questions were: (i) What is the most important time to start some work? (ii) What is the most important work to do? (iii) Who is the most important person? The king announced that whoever would answer the questions, would get a reward of 5,000 gold coins.No one could answer the questions of the king. The king went to a saint the king was sure to find the correct answers from him as the saint was very wise. The king disguised himself as a poor man and went to the saint, because he did not mix with the rich. The king placed his questions before him and asked their answers, but he did not answer and kept quite. The king spent the whole day with him. In the meantime a wounded and bearded man came there and collapsed. The king dressed his wounds. The man was his enemy. The treatment and behavior of the king changed his mind and he became his faithful servant. The saint then told the king the answers. The most important time to start some work is the present, the most important work is what we are doing now and the most important person is that man with whom we are at the moment.
